What is a rental history report?
A rental history report (also called an SSN trace or address history report) is a verified record of all addresses linked to your Social Security Number. It shows where you have lived, for how long, and confirms your identity. Landlords use rental history reports to verify where an applicant has previously rented and to catch misrepresentations on rental applications.
Is a rental history report really free?
Yes. Renters get one free rental history report every 6 months — no credit card, no identity scan, no account required to run it. The report is a real SSN trace from our data partner. Saving a shareable link uses a free account. Criminal and eviction reports are renter Platinum ($5/mo) and need identity (Verify $5 or included with Platinum). Credit reports are not live.
What does a rental history report include?
A rental history report from VerticalRent includes: all addresses linked to your SSN (current and historical), estimated move-in and move-out dates for each address, SSN issuance state and approximate year, a death index check, and SSN identity confirmation. It is not identity verification ($5). It does not include criminal records, eviction records, or a bureau credit score. Criminal and eviction are paid reports (Platinum for renter self-screening). Bureau credit reports are not live.
Will running a rental history report affect my credit score?
No. An SSN trace (rental history report) is not a bureau credit pull. VerticalRent does not pull a TransUnion or Experian score for this report. Bureau credit reports are not live.
What is an SSN trace?
An SSN trace is a search of address records linked to a Social Security Number. Unlike a credit check, it does not query credit bureaus. Instead it searches identity databases maintained by data providers to find all addresses ever associated with that SSN. The result is a complete rental and residential address history.

Can I share my rental history report with multiple landlords?
Yes — when you create a free VerticalRent account after running your report, you receive a unique shareable link for your report. You can send this link to any landlord. The link does not expire for 90 days and can be re-shared as many times as you like.
How is this FCRA compliant?
VerticalRent's rental history report follows the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA). We capture explicit consent before running any report, maintain an audit log of all searches, and comply with permissible purpose requirements. When run by a landlord on an applicant, the landlord is required to certify they have written authorization from the applicant.
What if my rental history report has wrong addresses?
Address mismatches can happen if someone used your SSN incorrectly, or if a previous tenant at one of your addresses had a similar name. If you find errors, submit a dispute through ScreenForge Labs at screenforgelabs.com/disputes — we follow the FCRA dispute process to investigate and correct your record.
Can a landlord run a rental history report on me without my permission?
Under the FCRA, a landlord must have a permissible purpose and typically needs your written consent to run any consumer report on you, including a rental history report. If a landlord uses VerticalRent to run a report on you, they are required to certify they have your written authorization before proceeding.
